The Grounds
The formal garden surrounding the house is laid to lawns with borders leading gently down to the ornamental lake. Beyond the lawns are paths and drives through camellia woods and orchards, and a fine walled vegetable garden, which has been restored and is run organically. Flowers and vegetables and fruit are grown here to supply the occupants of the house.
Guests are free to wander through the gardens and enjoy the private grounds and views. Organised tours of the garden can be arranged through head-gardener Mr John Harris. Mr Harris is a hugely experience gardener, author and a presenter on BBC Radio Cornwall's gardening programme. Mr Harris will happily give guests an informative and enjoyable tour of the grounds and walled garden and is happy to answer all gardening questions. Horticulturists will find him a mind of information. As well as giving tours of Tresillian gardens Mr Harris will be able to recommend other local gardens of interest and merit.
The Tresillian orchard currently has more than 110 types of apple tree growing in it, and is well-known throughout Cornwall and the West of England for its preservation of so many species that would otherwise have become extinct. In addition, Mr Harris is growing many varieties of pre-C1900 plant species in the walled garden in an attempt to keep up the authenticity of a Victorian kitchen garden.
Within the grounds, close to the Main House and Apple Store there is a children's playground. Recently erected the playground comprises of swings and climbing frames, a tree-house, slide and sand-pit. Tenants are welcome to use the equipment at their own risk. There is also a sunken trampoline situated between the house and the lake which is less dangerous than a free-standing one but non-the-less children should be supervised at all time on this equipment.
With a lake so close to the house, parents are also advised that children should be closely supervised.
Did you know...?
In the old Cornish language, 'Tresillian' means "a place of eels", but the house was in fact named after a nearby village on the Tresillian River.
